The Half Hitch Knot - Visual Reference

The half hitch knot is very useful when tying off flies.  It is an alternative to the whip finish method.  A half hitch tool (rear end of most bodkins) or empty pen casing may be used to perform the following steps.

1.  Pull thread down to allow space to tie the knot.

2.  Wrap the half hitch tool around the thread.  Apply slight pressure on thread with bobbin.

3.  Place the half hitch tool onto the eye of the hook and slide the knot off the tool and onto the head of the fly.  Repeat a few times and apply lacquer.
