Fly Tying

N2 Cocktail Cray - Concept Fly

Conception:  Feb 19th, 2004

The idea for this fly occurred during a lunch break my colleague and I shared in Feb, 2004.  After finishing our meals, which contained tiger shrimp, I was playing with the remains of a shrimp tail on my plate (I know, I know, never play with your food).  When I flared the tail section out I couldn't help but notice the resemblance to an everyday crayfish (or crawfish), waving it's pincers around as if in a defensive stance.  That image was enough to get the wheels turning and a few days later, the first N2 Cocktail Cray was tied.

Traditional it's not, but the depth of realism achieved by using a cured tail section of a tiger shrimp is uncanny.

I have no idea what effects, if any, biodegradation will have on this fly.  I did however dry out the tail completely, meticulously remove any traces of shrimp meat, and lightly coat the entire thing with epoxy prior to tying it.

If you have any feedback on this fly, or if you're aware of seeing this tying technique before please let me know via e-mail at nick@onlineflytyer.com  ;  I am eager to try this fly out on local smallmouth bass waters come warmer weather.
